1. Sarah: Hello P1, my name is Sarah. I'm a student at the University of Michigan-Flint, my current major is computer science. I 2.appreciate you being a participant in my study for the Human-computer interaction course. Before we begin the 3.questionnaire, I would like to introduce to you the subject which I will be talking about and how you can help me. In this 4.course, we were told to pick any kind of system which is considered problematic or unorganized, my group and I chose to 5.work on and redesign a website called EVGA. Before we interact with the website, I would like to ask you some questions 6.about your experience with EVGA and other similar shopping websites.
7. P1: alright, sounds good.
8. S: First of all, have you ever heard of EVGA?
9. P1: No, I haven’t.
10. S: So you’ve never bought anything from them before?
11. P1: Nope, never heard of them or bought anything from there, never seen it in any ads or anything of the sort.
12. S: ok so, we’ll instead make these next questions about whatever your preferred shopping website is.
13. P1: It’s usually amazon if I’m having it delivered or Best Buy if I’m doing pick-up.
14. S: So, let’s focus on Amazon since that’s a good parallel to our system. How often do you order from them?
15. P1: I’m not a very frequent purchaser because of delivery costs, those tend to add up, so I’d say about 2 to 3 times a month?
16. S: When was the last time you visited the site? Not necessarily to make a purchase, but just visiting in general?
17. P1: Just visited just about… Five days ago?
18. S: Alright, how was your experience with the site then?
19. P1: Since I’m an Amazon Prime member, I would say on a scale of 1-10 a… 9. Primarily because I’m still paying a monthly fee 20. and I wish I could have all those benefits without having to be a Prime member, but I guess everything comes with a cost. So 21. a solid 9 in my books.
22. S: Ok, so what are some problems you’ve encountered when using the site?
23. P1: Sometimes the things that I order don’t get delivered despite the site saying that they have been. Also a lot of times the 24. things that I’m looking for aren’t available. I think those are the primary ones.
25. S: What are some of your favorite or least favorite things about the site?
26. P1: My favorite things about the site… I like that most of the latest technology is available there, and Prime members get 27.good discounts. There’s also a wide array of choices, that’s definitely a plus. My least favorite things would probably be the 28.fact that sometimes they don’t necessarily have what I’m looking for or a good substitute for it. Not to mention how jacked 29.up the prices can get sometimes. It’s easy to fall victim to scams on Amazon, people who bypass the security measures you 30.know?
31.S: Finally, how do you feel about buying from an online retailer rather than a brick-and-mortar shop like Microcenter or Best 32.Buy?
33. P1: I have had good and bad experiences with them, for Amazon it’s been mostly positive, but from other sites it can be hard 34. to keep track of your purchase, usually because of a lack in tracking information or incorrect information.
35. S: Thank you. We have completed the first part of the study. We are going to move on to the next part which is interacting 36.with the website. You will be given a set of tasks to operate on the website, however, I will not tell you how to do it, we 37.consider you a new user to the website and are free to do whatever you see appropriate. Do not worry if you get confused or 38.don't know how to perform the tasks, the purpose of this study is to locate small issues and make improvements. I also want 39.to remind you that we are not testing you or judging your performance. If you have any questions before or while performing 40.the tasks, do not hesitate to ask. Finally, I would like to ask you to think aloud while performing the tasks. Is that ok? Let’s get 41. started.
42. P1: Ok
43. S: You’re currently on the homepage, I’d like for you to start by looking for a product, perhaps a gaming keyboard for 44.example
45. [P1 scrolls up and down the home page a bit, looking at “trending” products. P1 then scrolls back to the top of the page and 46. clicks on the products tab. They struggle to read the options for a minute before locating the “gaming keyboards” link]
47. S: Now I’d like you to add one to your cart and proceed to the checkout
48. [P1 has no issue with this, placing the item in the cart easily and getting to the login screen. They got confused when they 49.were brought to the login rather than a checkout.]
50. S: Please act as if you were making an account
51. [P1 does so, only taking a moment to get to the sign-up from the login screen. They got frustrated at the multitude of 52.verification codes and trying to uncheck from the EVGA email newsletter subscription. After completing the signup process 53.otherwise uneventfully, they then had some issue getting back to where they were before, incorrectly assuming a link will take 54.them back to the home page, instead getting sent to a “contact us” page before finding the sign-up link had opened in a 55.new tab]
56. S: Next, I’d like you to act as if you were going to complete your purchase
57. [P1 goes to do this before being informed they must activate their account by a pop-up window. They open the link in the 58. activation email, and it automatically fills in the code to the website. They pick out the free shipping option, but express 59.displeasure with the extra up to $50 for the expedited shipping]
60. P1: Oh! My Honey extension just found some coupons too! There’s one advantage, I guess.
61. [P1 finishes the rest of the simulated purchase without incident]
62. S: alright, that’s as far as you need to go for this step. The last thing I need you to do is go to the discussion forums and look 63.around, perhaps find a thread about your newly purchased product. [said in joking]
64. [P1 easily locates the forum home in the community tab and navigates to a thread about keyboards]
65. S: That’s everything. Thank you for completing the tasks. I have a few more questions to ask you regarding your experience. 66. In general, how was your experience and how did it effect your opinion of the EVGA site?
67. P1: There was a lot of information, but it wasn’t very user friendly. It’s a little bit outdated in their choice of font for the forums 68. or the length of the sign-up with all of the activation codes for example. There also wasn’t a lot of clear direction that stood 69.out clearly. For example, changing the color or font for the sections asking the user to go on to the next step would’ve been 70. useful, but instead it was all the same as the rest of the message, which was like two to three paragraphs. Besides that, I think 71. it was fine, out of 10 I would rate this site a… 6 to 7? Just because of how user un-friendly it is for new users.
72. S: What did you like the most about the site?
73. P1: I liked the home page; the animations were well done, and I liked to see the trending items. It’s just when you go from 74. the home page to like the forum page it’s quite a jarring difference in how it looks, it looks so outdated.
75. S: What did you dislike the most?
76.P1: The signup process was lengthy and confusing, if I was just randomly stumbling across the site and I wanted to buy 77.something, I wouldn’t have sat through it. I’d go looking somewhere else
78. S: Did you get confused at any point?
79. P1: during the signup process I had to send verification codes to my phone three separate times, and once to my email too. 80. It wouldn’t be so bad if they explained it better but as it is it was pretty confusing.
81. S: Since you sort of already answered what you think the website needs to improve, I’ll skip to the last question. Do you think 82. that the website is doing a good job in selling products?
83. P1: Well, I haven’t seen any ads for them or anything, so they’re lacking in that regard, but yes. They seem to have a fairly 84.large community, so I think they’re probably doing a decent job.
85.S: Alright, thank you very much for your time and for being a participant in this study. Your answers and opinion were very 86.helpful in exposing the things that need fixing and showing us what can be improved on this website for our project.
87.P1: No problem

1. S: Hello P2, my name is Sarah. Have you ever heard of the EVGA website before?
7. P2: I’ve heard of it from my partner, but I haven’t visited it before.
8. S: So, you’ve never bought anything from them yourself then?
9. P2: That’s correct.
10. S: Alright, we’ll make these next few questions about your preferred shopping website then. You prefer to use Amazon if I 11. remember correctly?
12. P2: Also correct.
13. S: Ok, how often would you say you make purchases from them?
14. P2: About two to three times a month I’d say.
15. S: And when was the last time you visited the site, not necessarily to make a purchase?
16. P2: Today.
17. S: And how was your experience last time?
18. P2: I think they have a pretty good site; it was a good experience.
19. S: What are some problems you’ve encountered while using the site?
20.P2: Sometimes when I’m looking for something, there are so many products that it takes a long time to find what I was 21.actually looking for.
22. S: What’s your favorite thing about the site?
23. P2: You can give the search bar a vague description and it’ll usually come up with something close to what you wanted.
24. S: Lastly, how do you feel about purchasing from an online retailer rather than a brick-and-mortar shop?
25. P2: It’s very convenient, especially with the pandemic going on.
26. S: Thank you. We have completed the first part of the study. We are going to move on to the next part which is interacting 27. with the website. You will be given a set of tasks to operate on the website, however, I will not tell you how to do it, we 28.consider you a new user to the website and are free to do whatever you see appropriate. Do not worry if you get confused or 29. don't know how to perform the tasks, the purpose of this study is to locate small issues and make improvements. I also want 30. to remind you that we are not testing you or judging your performance. If you have any questions before or while performing 31. the tasks, do not hesitate to ask. Finally, I would like to ask you to think aloud while performing the tasks. Is that ok? Let’s get 32. started.
33. P2: Sure.
34. S: you’re now on the home page, I’d like you to search for a product, perhaps a gaming keyboard.
35. [P2 opens the products tab and has difficulty reading the categories due to the font size. They then navigate to a specific 36.product’s page and begin browsing it for information.]
37. P2: Normally on amazon I’d be looking at the description and reviews to see if this was a good keyboard or not, but they 38.don’t have anything like that on here.
39. [P2 has not noticed the button labeled “specs” near the middle of the page, which would’ve brought up more information]
40. S: Now I’d like you to add that to your cart…
41. [P2 does so easily in the middle of S’s sentence]
42. S: … and proceed to checkout…
43. [P2 clicks on the checkout button, but seems confused when brought to the login page]
44. S: …and then go as if you were making an account.
45. [P2 goes through the signup process partially, electing to give false information to only simulate the process. Circumventing 46. the many activation codes.]
47. S: Finally, I’d like you to take a look around the forums, perhaps look at a thread about your new keyboard?
48. [P2 struggles once again to read the small font of the categories, as well as the titles of the various forums, but they 49.eventually make their way to the appropriate threads]
50. S: That’s everything. Thank you for completing the tasks. I have a few more questions to ask you regarding your experience. 51. In general, how was your experience and how did it effect your opinion of the EVGA site?
52. P2: I’m unfamiliar with the products they sell and it was a little bit tricky for me to figure some of it out, but it wasn’t bad.
53. S: What did you like the most?
54. P2: A lot of shopping websites are sort of similar in that… flow of events. You go in, find your item, put it in your cart, and 55.check out. So I guess I liked that it was similar in that way.
56. S: What did you dislike the most?
57. P2: I think their product description page was not very descriptive, they didn’t really give specifications.
58. S: Did you get confused at any point?
59. P2: When you told me to go into the forums, that’s not something I’m used to doing, so it did take me a while to figure out 60. where that was.
61. S: What do you think needs improvement?
62. P2: Better specifications and make it easier to find products. I’m not very tech-savvy so it was hard to find things when you 63. don’t know the lingo necessarily.
64. S: Do you think that the website is doing a good job in selling products?
65. P2: It’s basic, it could be better.
66. S: Thank you very much for your time and for being a participant in this study. Your answers and opinion were very helpful in 67. exposing the things that need fixing and showing us what can be improved on this website for our project.
68. P2: glad to help

-
Zamzam: Okay let’s start now. First, I would like you to go to the URL and find the product tab
[user enters in the website URL, tried to point to the search tab but eventually found the product tab]
16. Zamzam: Great, now I want you to find a product that you find interesting.
[User found went to the product tab and clicked on a product]
17. Search for the product and see using the search tab
[user type in the product but was leading to amazon]
18. Zamzam: Okay, now its leading you to amazon because it’s price comparison
19. User: Oh okay, I was confused I thought they collaborated to amazon or something
20. Zamzam: Don’t focus on that because I don’t want it to be complicated for you
21. User: okay
22. Zamzam: Okay, I would like you to add the product to your cart
[user adds the product to the cart but tries to cart and clicks on the cart]
23. Zamzam: Next, checkout the product and select a payment method
[User selected payment method and continued]
24. Zamzam: Now you selected your payment method proceed on to the next step
[User verified shipping address and was one click away from place order]
25. Zamzam: You did a very great job, now let’s move on to the post question part.
26. User: Okay
27. Zamzam: How do you feel like the layout of the EVGA?

29. Zamzam: What’s one thing you enjoyed about EVGA
30. The color coordination and how easy it was to find products
31. Zamzam: What did you not enjoy about the website?
32. User: The unnecessary information at the button page and the product page didn’t have enough description about the items.
33. Zamzam: What’s a difficulty you encountered using the website?
34. User: Scrolling through the website and reading through the homepage not knowing what information was important
35. Zamzam: Would you buy stuff from the website?
36. User: Yes, I feel like it’s a better option
37. Zamzam: What are something you would change about the EVGA?
38. User: The layout and search tab leading you to amazon because it’s really confusing.
39. Zamzam: Thank you very much for participating.
40. User: You are welcome

Zamzam: Would you use a different website other than EVGA to purchase hardware stuff?
-
USER 4: No, I don’t find any use with hardware but if I do find it useful, I would recommend to others.
-
Zamzam: Okay now we are going to move to the next part of this study.
-
USER 4: Sure
-
Zamzam: Based on you navigating through the website this couple few days, I have created an account for you and would like you to first demonstrate to me how you would search for your products and place an order.
-
Zamzam: Okay let’s begin now. First, I would like you bring up the website by using any search engine of your choice
[user enters in the website URL, and clicked on the cite]
16. Zamzam: Great, now I want you to find a product that you find interesting.
[User found went to the product tab and clicked on a product]
17. Zamzam: Search for the product and see using the search tab
[user type in the product and was overwhelming so used he used the product tab instead]
18. Zamzam: Okay, I see that you were very overwhelmed that it was bringing amazon up. It does this to compare prices.
19. User 4: Oh okay, I thought I did something wrong because it was so much going on
20. Zamzam: Especially considering that this is the first hardware site you have navigated over the past few days I don’t want you to be overwhelmed.
21. User 4: Yes, I say am a very optimistic person
22. Zamzam: Okay, I would like you to add the product to your cart
[user adds the product to the cart]
23. Zamzam: Next, checkout the product and select a payment method
[User selected payment method and continued]
24. Zamzam: Now you selected your payment method proceed on to the next step
[User verified shipping address and was one click away from place order]
25. Zamzam: You did a very excellent job especially knowing how hard it’s for you to navigate through sites in general. now let’s move on to the post question part.
26. User 4: Yes, I say this was a good experience and perhaps might come in handy
27. Zamzam: How do you feel like the layout of the EVGA?
28. User 4: There was a lot going on especially when you first told me to navigate through it. As a first timer it was very overwhelming.
29. Zamzam: What’s one thing you enjoyed about EVGA
30. User 4: In kind of a way I would say it’s organized okay and so that made me feel good but there is so much going on within the homepage alone.
31. Zamzam: What did you not enjoy about the website?
32. User 4: The process of placing an order I feel like a lot of the steps were unnecessary. I get it that it’s a way to keep the site secure, but it would be put in a less long process.
33. Zamzam: What’s a difficulty you encountered using the website?
34. User 4: Having so much stuff on the product page. It was very unorganized.
35. Zamzam: Would you buy stuff from the website?
36. User 4: No, the website looks more harder than it should be, and it doesn’t come trustworthy to me
37. Zamzam: What are something you would change about the EVGA?
38. User 4: I would change the tabs and make it more organized.
39. Zamzam: Thank you very much for participating.
40. User 4: You are very welcome. This was a very good experience for me never knew I would be part of a study.

P5: The user is a 20-year-old female. She has no experience in computer science or programming in general. She knows how to use the computer just for fun.
1-Me: Hello user, my name is Ferris Abraham. I'm a student at the University of Michigan- Flint
2-comment my current major is computer science. I appreciate you being a participant in my
3-study for the human-computer interaction of course. Before we begin the questionnaire, I
4-would like to introduce to you the subject which I will be talking about and how you can help
5-me. if this course, we were told to pick any kind of system which is considered problematic or
6-unorganized Karma my group and I just work on and redesign a website called EVGA. before
7-we interact with the website, I would like to ask you some questions about your experience
8-with EVGA and shopping websites.
9-User: sounds good
10-Me: Have you ever heard of the EVGA website?
11-user: no
12-Me: have you ever bought anything from the EVGA website before?
13-User: no
14-Me: Because you are not familiar with EVGA, which website do you use for online shopping?
15-User: I don't usually do much online shopping, I personally prefer going to actual stores.
16-however, I would choose Amazon for online shopping.
17-Me: How many times have you made purchases from Amazon?
18-User: I do not know the exact number of how many times I purchased an item, I use Amazon
19-to order items like twice a month.
20-Me: When was the last time you visited the site?
21-User: one week ago.
22-Me: how was your experience the last time you visited the site?
23-User: it was amazing, I love Amazon.
24-Me: what problems have you had when using the site?
25-User: I had some problems with Amazon Prime, whenever I ordered an item on Amazon,
26-they gave me a free trial for their subscription, and then 14 days later they charged me 14$.
27-It happened a couple of times.
28-Me: What are some of your favorite things about the site? Least favorite things?
29-User: There are many things that I like about Amazon, they have good customer service,
30-they are easy to reach. Amazon Prime for watching movies is awesome, this encouraged me
31-to subscribe. You can also find whatever you want on Amazon, they provide you with literally
32-everything.
33-Me: How do you feel about purchasing products from an online retailer rather than a
34-brick-and-mortar shop like Micro Center?
35-User: I actually prefer doing both, it depends on what the user is looking for. For instance, if he is
36-looking for clothing stuff, he should go to the store and try the outfits, but if he is looking for things
37-like a book, he can easily order them online.
38-Me: Thank you. We have completed the first part of the study. We are going to move on to the
39-next part which is interacting with the website. You will be given a set of tasks to operate on the
40-website, however, I will not tell you how to do it, we consider you a new user to the website and
41-are free to do whatever you see appropriate. Do not worry if you get confused or didn't know how
42-to perform the tasks, the purpose of this study is to locate small things and make improvements.
43-If you have any questions before or while performing the tasks, do not hesitate to ask.
44-User: All right
45-Me: You are currently on the home page
46-Me: Please search for a product
47-[User sees the searching bar and clicks on it, the user searches for a specific gaming mouse called GM08. The item is not found.]
48-Me: That’s great. Now I want you to be a member of the EVGA website, can you please sign up
49-for an account?
50-[The user didn’t know how to get back to the home page after searching for the item. The user is
51-looking for the signing up page, he sees the profile icon on the top-right corner and he clicks on it.
52-The user clicks on the “sign up” button, he fills the fields with appropriate information. The user
53-uses an international phone number, he does not receive a confirmation letter from EVGA in
54-order to sign up for the account.]
55-Me: Now that you familiarized yourself with the website, try and look for an item to purchase.
56-[The user goes into the motherboards section, he tries to buy a motherboard for 500$, the
57-website asks for registration again, although he tried to sign up for an account and failed.]
58-Me: thank you. Now I want you to look for the discussion forums and read the articles.
59-[User goes back to the home page and looks on the top of the screen and clicks on community,
60-the user is looking for the discussion forms, he found a label called general discussion. The user
61-is now reading the discussions without facing any issues.]
62-Me: Finally, can you join the elite membership?
63-[The user is confused and looking for the elite membership sign but he couldn’t find it.]
64-Me: In general, what is your opinion about the EVGA website?
65-User: EVGA site is not that bad, I really like the products they are offering. The website needs
66-better design and organization, the user feels confused while using the website.
67-Me: what kinds of details do you believe need improvement?
68-User: the interface in general needs improving. The navigation bar also needs more details and
69-information because a new user who is not familiar with the products will be lost.
70-Me: What did you not like the most?
71-User: I did not like the registration process
72-Me: Did you get confused while using the website?
73-User: Yes, there were times when I got really confused.
74-Me: Do you think that the website is doing a good job in selling products?
75-I’ll be honest, the products on the website are excellent, it's just the way of marketing the
76-products using an online website is unprofessional.
77-Thank you very much for your time and for being a participant in this study. Your answers and
78-opinion were very helpful in exposing the things that need fixing.

10-Me: Have you ever heard of the EVGA website?
11-User: No never
12-Me: Have you ever bought anything from the EVGA website before?
13-User: no
14-Me: have you ever used similar online websites for purchasing items?
15-User: Yes I have. I used Gamestop to purchase an item.
16Me: How many times/how often have you made purchases from the site?
17-User: Once
18-Me: When was the last time you visited the site?
19-User: probably a year ago
20-Me: How was your experience the last time you visited the site?
21-User: it was good overall
22-Me: What problems have you had when using the site?
23-User: I had none
24-Me: What are some of your favorite things about the site? Least favorite things?
25-User: The design of the website is cool, I love how they are showing their products, they tempt
26-you to buy a product.
27-Me: How do you feel about purchasing products from an online retailer rather than a
28-brick-and-mortar shop like Micro Center?
29-User: I personally do not use online websites to buy stuff. I like going to stores more, I prefer
30-seeing the products in real life.
31-Me: Thank you. We have completed the first part of the study. We are going to move on to the
32-next part which is interacting with the EVGA website. You will be given a set of tasks to operate
33-on the website, however, I will not tell you how to do it, we consider you a new user to the
34-website and are free to do whatever you see appropriate. Do not worry if you get confused or
35-didn't know how to perform the tasks, the purpose of this study is to locate small things and make
36-improvements. If you have any questions before or while performing the tasks, do not hesitate to
37-ask.
38-User: okay let’s begin
39-Me: right now, you are on the home page.
40-[The user is currently looking at the products of the website without complaining]
41-Me: Now that you’ve taken a look at the EVGA website, can you please try and search for a
42-product?
43-[The user hits the search bar and searches for a graphic card called GTX 3050]
44-Me: Now that you’ve searched for a product, go ahead and register for an account in order to
45-purchase this product.
46-[The user had the same issue as the first participant, he couldn’t create an account because he
47-didn’t receive a confirmation message on his phone]
48-Me: now that you’ve seen that you encountered a problem with registration, can you buy a
49-product without signing up?
50-[The user goes back to the home page, searches for the product, and tries to purchase it. The
51-website takes him back to the registration page in order to register before purchasing the item]
52-Me: now that you couldn’t register, can you try and open the discussion form and interact with
53-other users?
54-[The user searches for the discussion form, he took about 10 minutes to find it. He successfully
55-joins the discussion form]
56-Me: Nicely done. Now for the final task, can you join the elite membership?
57-[The user couldn’t find the button for joining the elite membership, and accordingly, he searched
58-for the elite membership using the search bar. The user couldn’t attempt to subscribe for the
59-membership because he couldn’t register.]
60-Me: In general, what is your opinion about the EVGA website?
61-User: The website seems all right but it is confusing sometimes. I’m addicted to gaming and
62-graphic cards, so you will always find me on websites similar to those, but unfortunately, this
63-website is unorganized. They also do not demonstrate their products professionally, there is so
64-much text without images of the products.
65-what kinds of details do you believe need improvement?
66-User: The EVGA website should work more on the appearance of the website, they can be more
67-successful if they organize their products. The registration page should be easier and simple,
68-there are lots of information taken to create an account.
69-What did you not like the most?
70-User: I did not like the navigation bar on top of the screen, I’m the type of person who escapes
71-the websites if there is so much text. I like images more than text, I like to see what the product
72-I’m going to buy is.
73-Did you get confused while using the website?
74-User: Yes I did, a couple of times.
75-Do you think that the website is doing a good job in selling products?
76-User: The website is not that bad, but they can do a better job in marketing their products.
77-Me: Thank you very much for your time and for being a participant in this study. Your answers 78-and opinion were very helpful in exposing the things that need fixing.
Phase 2.4
Do's
-
Products tab is the preferred method of people to find things, font size might need adjusting though
-
Product to cart to checkout pipeline was good
-
Keep the color coordination across the site
-
Animations, maybe. Some people like them, others find them overwhelming

Don't
-
Search bar shouldn't include other websites, it's confusing
-
Have everything in one big mess on the products/community tab, maybe do sub-menus instead
-
Don't restrict international phone numbers during sign-up
-
Don't put the product details on a separate page behind a easily missable button
-
Don't require 3 to 4 separate activation/confirmation codes during sign-up
-
Overload your customers with paragraphs of information
